tnempoleved retcarahc (character development)

well well well well well well well... how development have the character.

When it comes down to, my opening has very little character development but not in the sense that you're thinking. It develops a small part of who he is, but if you dig deeper into the scene you can really see how he is in detail.

I'll raise an example, the standalone shot of him moving into frame from under the water. That shot may as well be to dissolve tension and transition effectively into the following scene. However, it doesn't only serve that purpose. The shot is also a sign as to why Sam swims in the first place; swimming gives him calm and tranquility. He swims because it's what puts his mind at ease and lets him turn off the noise for just a second. And this conclusion can be brought about when we introduce several other aspects of the production itsel, like the sound design. A rapid and disorienting soundscape contrasted against the almost chillingly quiet of the pool shows us what is going on in Sam's mind. Another great indicator of this is the rapid editing. These two techniques both serve the same purpose and concrete the ideas we have about Sam.

Another piece of very specific character development is the edit in of water and close ups of swimming (even though the audience can't tell what it is exactly). We can connect these flashes of the water with the reveal of his swimming, and come to the conclusion that all the training and working out is with a single goal in mind, to swim.

These small details that often times get disregarded make up the character that is Sam. It is not just a story about Sam. Rather, Sam is the story.
